Windows 8.1 (Blue) – Now Available!

Windows 8.1Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 update is now available to download. Windows 8 users will see a notification in the Windows Store with a prompt to upgrade to the new operating system.  If you installed Windows 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store on top of Windows 8 then you can move straight to the final edition in the Store today.

If you performed a clean install of Windows 8.1 Preview by using an ISO, then you can update to the final version of Windows 8.1 using the Microsoft Store, but the system won’t activate without a Windows 8.1 license key. Microsoft says existing Windows 8 keys will not work on systems that clean installed the Preview and update to 8.1. If you were previously  running Windows 8 then you’ll need to reinstall that copy before moving to 8.1 to ensure you don’t have to purchase a new key.

Upgrades:  Don’t have a Windows 8 device? You can still install 8.1 on a Win 7 machine; you just won’t get the update for free.  Users with Windows 7 will have to pay the same price Microsoft was already charging for Windows 8: $120 for the standard version, and $200 for Windows 8.1 Pro.  Additionally, Microsoft will also be selling so-called full-version software, allowing you to install the OS on a machine that isn’t already running Windows.

Windows 8.1  has brought back the Start Button (not in the traditional sense), but back nonetheless; and a host of other enhancements, including the ability to bypass the Live Tiles screen and boot directly to the desktop.  Find out more information regarding the newest Windows release here.
